We have had a rash of outboard motor thefts over the past 3 weeks on Camano Island. Some were taken in burglaries, but others have been taken right off the back of boats parked in yards and driveways. The motors stolen off the back of boats have at least (in some cases) been secured to the boats with padlocks, but the locks have been cut.
I would suggest everyone either remove their kicker motors or secure them with more than just a padlock. Please pass the word on to friends or neighbors that might have boats (with motors attached) parked outside in areas easily accessible to potential thieves. We are also asking anyone who might observe suspicious activity related to these thefts please call the Island County Sheriff’s Office at 360-629-2224.
Thank you for your help,

To citizens of Island County:
The Sheriff's Office has received reports of someone claiming to be a computer support company calling people to say that their (the victim's) computer is infected with a virus and the company wants to remove it. They then start asking questions to try and get the victim to provide enough information that would allow the company to remotely access the computer to clean it. They may also ask about e-mail accounts and passwords.
Computer companies will not “cold call” and attempt to gain this type of information. If you are contacted by someone like this simply hang up or ask for a name (and a call back number) so you can research the information. Most scammers will not provide you this and will hang up on you.
Always be cautious when anyone requests personal information over the phone or by email.
Citizens of Island County:
We have recently experienced a rash of predominately daytime burglaries in the North Whidbey Island area. The common theme involves someone knocking on the front door and (if no one answers) then access is made into the home, either through an unlocked door or somewhere else that ease of entry can be made. Generally speaking the burglars are taking small things of value such as jewelry, cash, silver and/or gold items. Fencing or otherwise selling this type of product can be done easier than larger, more cumbersome merchandise. The time it takes to ransack a home is also reduced when thieves target smaller, potentially more valuable items. The homes that are especially vulnerable to this type of crime are those that are somewhat isolated from view of nearby neighbors and have limited security.
Please ensure that your homes are properly locked and also that items like loose jewelry are placed away in secure areas of your residence. Also be sure to report suspicious activity in and around your homes; activity like someone knocking on doors with no apparent reason or otherwise trying to get information that seems peculiar or threatening. Getting together with neighbors that you trust and having them assist in watching over your home when you are not there is always a good idea. Forming neighborhood watch groups is another step that can be taken to prevent becoming a victim of crime.
Thanks and as always, BE SAFE!

I would just like to remind everyone that pets need to be on a leash when not on your property, regardless of how well-trained the pets may be.
This is not only a Bayview Estates By-law, but an Island County law as well. And please let your renters know that their cooperation is appreciated.
